SMRT appoints ex-LTA chief Ngien Hoon Ping as new group CEO

SMRT is appointing Ngien Hoon Ping as its new group chief executive officer (CEO), with effect from Aug 1.

Ngien will also join SMRT as a board director on May 1, the public transport services provider said in a statement on Friday (Mar 18).

Ngien was most recently the CEO of NTUC FairPrice Group's supply chain business, a role he has held since September 2020, where he implemented supply chain digitalisation and process enhancements.

Prior to that, Ngien was the chief executive of the Land Transport Authority (LTA) from 2016 to 2020, where he helped improve rail reliability and safety, and led the delivery of infrastructure projects including the Thomson-East Coast Line and the Lornie Highway.

SMRT's chairman Seah Moon Ming noted that the board reviews its leadership succession plan regularly to ensure relevance and currency.

He expects the leadership succession will "position SMRT well to capitalise on new growth and development opportunities in this digital age".

Ngien takes over the position from Neo Kian Hong, who will step down after helming the role since 2018.

After stepping down, Neo will be the adviser to Ngien until Oct 31 this year, to facilitate a smooth transition, SMRT said.
