DONALD Trump's victory in the 58th US presidential election with Republicans controlling both the House and Senate took markets by surprise.

Mid-day, the Straits Times Index (STI) fell 2.6 per cent to 2,762 points but this moderated post Trump's acceptance speech highlighting "US growth and renewal".

Citi political analysts highlight the possibility of a more isolationist foreign policy. Confrontation with China over trade policy is also possible but tensions with Russia could decline.
