THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded 2 separate contracts for the procurement of new trains and an expansion of depot facilities for the Sengkang-Punggol LRT (SPLRT), worth a total of around S$596 million.

In a news release on Tuesday (Feb 15), the transport statutory board said it has awarded the first S$439 million contract to a consortium of Mitsubishi Corporation, Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Engineering and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia-Pacific.

The contract covers the procurement of 17 new 2-car trains for SPLRT, as well as the provision of a signalling system, a guideway system and depot equipment for the expanded depot.

The 17 new trains are expected to be delivered progressively from 2024 to 2027 and will steadily replace the 25 existing 1-car trains, which will increase passenger capacity on the SPLRT network, the authority said.

In addition to the 1-car trains, the current fleet includes 16 2-car trains.

Meanwhile, LTA's second contract worth S$157 million was awarded to Sato Kogyo for the design and construction of the expansion of the SPLRT depot, which will increase from 3.5 ha to 11.1 ha.

The expanded depot, which is located above the North East Line's Sengkang depot, will include 2 new reception tracks to shorten train launching time and 3 new traction power substations to support the operations of the 2-car trains.

Expanding the depot will also increase its stabling capacity and create more space for maintenance facilities, LTA said, adding that depot expansion works will start in the first quarter of 2022 and are expected to complete by 2027.

Sato Kogyo was previously involved in the construction of Upper Thomson station on the Thomson-East Coast Line, as well as the Bencoolen, Mattar and Bedok North stations on the Downtown Line.
