[SINGAPORE] Ride-hailing platform Grab and taxi operator Strides on Tuesday (Mar 31) announced a series of fare increases and driver support measures to combat the recent volatility in pump prices.

Both companies said that the adjustments are necessary as fuel costs remain high and unpredictable, putting significant financial strain on drivers.

Passengers using Grab services will see a change in pricing starting from Apr 7. The company is renaming its existing S$0.50 “Driver Fee” to a “Fuel Surcharge” and increasing the amount to S$0.90 per trip.

This temporary surcharge will apply to all transport services on the platform, excluding standard or metered taxi rides, and is currently scheduled to last until May 31. Grab emphasised that all proceeds from this surcharge will be passed directly to drivers to help offset their daily operating costs.

In the taxi sector, Strides has also adjusted its pricing. Effective from Monday, street-hail fares for Strides taxis will increase by S$0.01 per distance and time-based unit.

This follows a similar move by Grab’s sister company and metered taxi operator GrabCab, which on Mar 23 said that it was raising its taxi fares from Mar 30 to May 31 in response to the same market pressures.

    Driver reliefs

Beyond fare hikes, both operators are dipping into internal funds to provide direct relief.

Grab said it has committed to a support package worth S$1.1 million. This includes fuel vouchers that were rolled out earlier in March, alongside upcoming enhancements to monthly cash bonuses and cashback rebates.

The company stated that it will continue to monitor fuel price movements and that its support will be reviewed periodically based on prevailing market conditions.

Strides, in collaboration with the National Taxi Association, has introduced its own suite of benefits to support its fleet.

The operator is providing a one-time S$50 fuel credit to all Strides Premier taxi and private-hire vehicle drivers, which can be used at its in-house fuel station in Changi South.

Strides claimed that its in-house station provides fuel savings of up to 35 per cent compared with market rates.

It is also offering up to S$500 in fuel credits to attract new driver-partners during the period of volatility.
