Abbott’s Singapore nutrition facility gets a green thumbs up
Since 2018, healthcare group Abbott’s nutrition facility in Singapore has invested in eight significant projects as part of its pursuit of energy efficiency. These initiatives included the installation of a new air compressor with variable speed drive functionality and improvements to the HVAC (heating, ventilation and air-conditioning) chiller plant efficiency.
These efforts resulted in 7.99 gigawatt hours of energy savings and a reduction of 2,459 tonnes of CO2 equivalent emissions, supporting the company’s goal of reaching a 30 per cent reduction by the end of 2030. Overall, the Abbott facility achieved a 12 per cent reduction in energy intensity from 1.43 kWh/lbs (kilowatt hour/pound) to 1.26 kWh/lbs.
In light of these achievements, Abbott was honoured with the Excellence in Energy, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Management award at the EENP Awards 2023. This accolade recognises Abbott’s exemplary performance in managing energy resources and reducing carbon emissions at its facility here.
The success of Abbott’s energy-efficient practices is due in part to the dedicated utilities excellence (UEx) team at the facility. This team oversees the plant’s energy management system, and several of its members have undertaken the Singapore Certified Energy Manager (SCEM) training.
“The SCEM training provided a thorough understanding of the key energy issues in the industry sector. For example, energy audits allowed the UEx team to understand the energy profile of the plant. From the energy audit, we were able to identify various improvements to our current energy management system and close the gaps to meet the organisation’s carbon reduction goal,” said Yik Yin Fun, site director at Abbott.
She added: “With sustainability embedded in everything we do, everyone is engaged in our environmental, health and safety approach. This is key to our success and preserving a healthy environment – now and for future generations.”
