[SINGAPORE] PSA Vietnam and Lach Huyen International Logistics & Industrial Park (LHF) on Friday (Jul 3) have signed an agreement to jointly develop and operate four deep-sea container berths at Lach Huyen Port in Hai Phong, Vietnam.

The investment has an annual handling capacity of 4.5 million TEUs (twenty-foot equivalent units).

Deep-sea container berths are specialised docking areas at maritime ports designed for the largest cargo ships.

They are typically deeper than 15 metres to accommodate ultra-large container vessels, and are equipped with massive ship-to-shore gantry cranes, on top of automated yards to load and unload containers quickly.

Development of the first two berths is scheduled to start at the end of 2026 and finish in 2028.

The remaining two berths will be developed in a subsequent phase, set to be fully completed by 2035, noted a joint statement.

It added that the joint venture will develop a “major hub” by establishing a strategic gateway presence in north Vietnam.

Nguyen Vinh Hau, general director of LHF, said: “The development of Lach Huyen Port is an important milestone in our vision to establish northern Vietnam as a leading logistics and industrial gateway in Asia.”

He added that the partnership with PSA will combine global port expertise with local market knowledge, coupled with the advantages of Hai Phong City’s Free Trade Zone to develop world-class infrastructure supporting trade, supply chain growth and further investments.

LHF is currently developing the Lach Huyen Free Trade Zone – Seaport and Industrial Park Complex in Hai Phong City.

It covers an area of up to 1,700 hectares, where the complex integrates an industrial park and a deep-water seaport within a free trade zone.

The zone aims to provide an open, transparent and professional investment environment that supports manufacturing activities and serves as an ideal place for investors globally.
