Malaysia’s longest-serving former leader remains outspoken, influential – and as controversial as ever.
Born into humble beginnings in Alor Setar, Kedah, on July 10, 1925, Dr Mahathir Mohamad rose to become one of Malaysia’s most consequential leaders and remains an influential force in the country’s politics as he nears 100.
He spent a total of 23 years and nine months at the helm, making him Malaysia’s longest-serving prime minister. In a historic comeback, Mahathir returned to power at 92, becoming the world’s oldest sitting head of government, and notably, the first Malaysian PM to lead without the backing of United Malays National Organisation (Umno).
