Ohtani’s ex-interpreter sentenced to nearly five years in betting-linked theft

THE former interpreter to Shohei Ohtani, who admitted stealing almost US$17 million from the Japanese baseball star to pay off illegal gambling debts, was sentenced to 57 months in prison on Thursday.

Ippei Mizuhara, 39, will plead guilty to one count of bank fraud - punishable by up to 30 years in prison - and one count of filing a false tax return, which carries a maximum sentence of three years, the Justice Department said.
