20 shortlisted for Prudential Eye Awards

A SHORTLIST of 20 emerging contemporary Asian artists was announced earlier this week for the inaugural Prudential Eye Awards, out of over 500 nominees who submitted their works to a judging panel of seven international art professionals.

The nominated artists came from 28 countries including Australia, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore, and were shortlisted into five categories of four artists each - painting, photography, sculpture, installation and digital/video.

These works will be on display at Suntec City Mall from Jan 17 to Feb 5 next year for public viewing.

According to Serenella Ciclitira, the co-founder of the Prudential Eye Awards and one of the judges, the panel had reviewed the works through a digital submission process, where votes were individually cast without knowledge of one another's decisions.

"We looked out for artists who have the potential to make a significant mark in the art world over the course of their careers . . . I was personally looking for work that demonstrated skill, imagination and flair," she says of the judging criteria.

With her on the panel of judges are former director-general of the British Council David Green, group director of programmes at the National Heritage Board of Singapore Tan Boon Hui and director of art gallery of Southern Australia Nick Mitzevich, among others.

An invitation-only award ceremony will be held on Jan 18, where five category winners and one overall winner will be announced.

The overall winner will have his or her work exhibited at the Saatchi Gallery in London next year.

The Prudential Eye Awards exhibition is on from Jan 17 to Feb 5, 2014, at the Crescent Room on Level 2 of Suntec City Mall. Opening hours are from 10am to 10pm. Admission is free. Log on to prudentialeyeawards.com for more information.
