2023: A make-or-break year for Singapore art market
The faltering of Hong Kong’s art market means Singapore gains. But can it hold those gains?
2023 is set to be critical year for Singapore’s art market, a transformation that begins right off the bat in January. The new premier art fair Art SG will debut on Jan 12 during Singapore Art Week, boasting over 150 top galleries from all around the world.
Some of these mega galleries (Gagosian and David Zwirner, among others) have never shown in Singapore before the pandemic – or perhaps, more accurately, before the problems engulfing Hong Kong in recent times.
But as several family offices and wealth management businesses flee the Fragrant Harbour for the Lion City, galleries are choosing to extend their catchment area of collectors southwards, where Singapore operates as a hub for the growing pool of South-east Asia-based art collectors.
