From test beds to public roads

[SINGAPORE] Driverless vehicles are starting to show up on Singapore’s roads, though not in a way most people would immediately notice.

From April, autonomous shuttles in Punggol will be open to the public, running short routes within the estate and linking housing clusters to places such as Oasis Terraces and Punggol Plaza.

The Republic has been testing autonomous vehicles (AVs) for close to a decade. Early pilots in one-north in 2016 drew attention, but deployments since then have remained largely within controlled environments.

Punggol is different. The vehicles will run on public roads, even if within a defined area. The routes are not long, stretching up to 12 km, and are built around everyday trips rather than novelty rides.

Two tie-ups are involved. Grab is working with WeRide, while ComfortDelGro has partnered China-based AV company Pony.ai. Initial rides are expected to be free, with fares introduced later.
