SGX Cares’ charity run, futsal events raise S$2.25 million for beneficiaries
Funds will go towards supporting underprivileged children and families, seniors, and persons with disabilities
THE Singapore Exchange (SGX) raised about S$2.25 million from its charity run and futsal, as well as other fundraising events throughout the calendar year, under its platform SGX Cares. (*see amendment note)
The annual SGX Cares Bull Charge Charity Run took place on Friday (Nov 8) at Marina Barrage, with about 4,500 participants. The bourse operator noted that it was one of the highest turnouts in recent years, and the funds raised comprise corporate donations and contributions from members of the public.
Loh Boon Chye, chief executive of SGX, said the high turnout and rallying of corporate partners demonstrated the “spirit of giving and solidarity”.
The funds raised will go towards supporting underprivileged children and families, seniors, and persons with disabilities that are part of SGX Cares’ beneficiaries. They include Awwa, Autism Association (Singapore) and Fei Yue Community Services.
Senior Minister of State for National Development Tan Kiat How was guest of honour.
Participants ran 5 km along a new route at Gardens by the Bay East. C-suite executives and other company leaders ran the 3 km route.
Charity futsal
On Sep 28, SGX held the ninth edition of its Charity Futsal at Kick Off @ Kovan, which raised S$137,000.
Around 34 teams participated across the Men’s, Women’s, Open and Youth categories, including a parliamentary team comprising Singapore ministers, SGX’s management team and former Singapore football players. Another participating team was Tasek Sailors, a non-profit organisation founded by Jane Ittogi that helps underprivileged youths through football and mentoring.
Minister of State for Culture, Community and Youth Alvin Tan was the guest of honour, participating in the parliamentary team, along with Minister for Health Ong Ye Kung.
Children from SGX Cares’ beneficiaries, including Awwa and Fei Yue Community Services, had the opportunity to go through a football clinic conducted by the former national players.
Funds from the event went towards supporting the same causes as the charity run.
SGX Cares
Since its inception in 2004, SGX Cares has raised more than S$50 million by rallying the financial community and SGX-listed companies.
The funds have gone towards more than 50 charities, supporting a variety of causes.
Besides SGX Cares Bull Charge, the initiative also comprises outreach and financial literacy programmes. For example, in September, SGX Cares hosted children with autism from Awwa at Temasek Polytechnic to learn about aviation. In June, it launched a financial literacy training camp for members of Singapore’s national football team.
