SP Group raises S$1 million through Community Chest for vulnerable seniors
This is the highest amount raised at the annual SP Charity Golf event so far
ENERGY company SP Group raised S$1 million for the SP Heartware Fund, with the funds going towards programmes for vulnerable seniors through Community Chest – the philanthropy and engagement arm of the National Council of Social Service.
The funds raised were presented to Community Chest at the annual SP Charity Golf event on Friday (Aug 2) at Tanah Merah Country Club. This is the highest amount raised at the event so far.
Besides contributions from SP’s business partners, SP employees also made donations to the fund over the past year, with the company matching their contributions dollar for dollar. SP’s customers also donated to the fund on platforms via their utilities bills and the SP app.
Since its inception in 2005, the SP Heartware Fund has raised more than S$22 million. It supports programmes such as befriending, counselling, caregiver support and community care.
Chew Sutat, chairman of Community Chest, added that the programmes include support for seniors without caregivers.
Leong Wai Leng, chairman of SP Group, said the programmes will reach about 25,000 seniors.
In March this year, SP Group donated S$1.1 million to non-profit organisation KidStart Singapore for educational resources to benefit 2,000 more children. The funds were for Green Adventures, an initiative by both organisations to teach children about sustainability literacy.
Since 2021, SP Group has donated a cumulative amount of S$3.2 million to KidStart.
