New Wave
Streetwear is being phased out. What's next for menswear?
VIRGIL ABLOH - BETTER known as the founding father of luxury streetwear - recently told Dazed magazine that the days of sweatshirts and hoodies were over - an irony considering that the menswear artistic director of Louis Vuitton is the creator of overpriced logo-centric streetwear label Off-White.
But even before Abloh's grand predictions, other designers were already looking beyond hoodies, logo T-shirts and trendy sneakers.
Dries van Noten, Kim Jones of Dior, Kris van Assche of Berluti, Alessandro Sartori of Zegna - to name a few - are stellar examples of menswear designers who consistently produce elegant, evergreen menswear collections that rank high artistically as well as in craftsmanship. Zegna, particularly, places great emphasis on technical innovations whether it's a lightweight travel suit or a recyclable garment, something Abloh has yet to experiment with at Vuitton.
