Economic nationalism wins: Opposition to acquisition of US Steel was bipartisan
Trumpism and Bidenism may have found a common economic nationalist ground in the ‘threat’ posed by Nippon Steel
US PRESIDENT Joe Biden is expected to announce that he will block the US$14.9 billion deal by Japan’s largest steel company Nippon Steel to acquire Pittsburgh-based US Steel, supposedly on national security grounds, said multiple media reports.
Accordingly, Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris on Sep 2 told an election rally in Pittsburgh that “US Steel should remain American-owned and American-operated”.
US Steel was “a historic American company”, said the vice-president. She stressed that it was “vital for our nation to maintain strong American steel companies”, and added that “I will always have the back of American steelworkers”.
