    WHEN foreign leaders come to the White House to meet with the American president, they usually sit in the Oval Office and exchange polite comments with him.

    Only afterwards behind closed doors do the US president and his guest begin to raise their differences.

    It was entirely different when President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky met in the Oval Office last Friday (Feb 28). The heated back-and-forth between the two leaders amounted to a striking breach of White House protocol that had no modern precedent.
