Why the Parf rebate drop is a big change for Singapore’s car owners

The $30,000 question: Why did Singapore slash the Parf rebate? Derryn Wong finds out.

Singapore’s car market just got a serious shake-up. In February, the government cut the Preferential Additional Registration Fee (Parf) rebate sharply, slashing the cap from S$60,000 to S$30,000 and reducing the rebate rate by 45 percentage points. In plain English: a lot of cars, especially pricier ones, just lost a meaningful chunk of their on-paper value overnight.

In this episode of TransportBT, a podcast of BT Correspondents, host Derryn Wong takes on a policy change that sounds dry but could hit almost everyone, whether you are a car buyer, dealer, ride-hailing user or even insurers. He speaks with automotive consultant Vincent Ng of the Vincar Group, who walks us through what the Parf rebate actually is, and how it may quietly reshape buying decisions across the market.

Why listen

  • What the Parf rebate really is If you have always nodded along when people mention Parf but never quite knew what it meant, this episode clears it up properly.
  • Why EVs may come out ahead The policy may not say “buy electric” outright, but the numbers now make that choice much harder to ignore.
  • Who gets hit hardest Luxury buyers may shrug, but mass-market and mid-range buyers could be the ones forced to rethink the most.
  • Why COE renewals may rise If the rebate at the end of 10 years is close to nothing, more owners may decide to keep their cars longer instead.

What makes the episode especially useful is that it does not pretend this is simple. Ng lays out the history, the mechanics and the likely unintended consequences, including why the official logic and the industry’s reading of it do not quite line up. If you own a car or want one: Listen now.
