COMMENTING on Singapore's latest round of Covid-19 curbs announced Friday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong said the stricter restrictions were "(needed) to stop more cases from popping up".

"The new clusters and unlinked community cases in the past fortnight are very worrying. We are testing more intensively, and doing our utmost to ring-fence the transmissions. But we also need stricter restrictions to stop more cases from popping up," wrote PM Lee in his Facebook post on the same day.

He also urged the public to stay at home as far as possible, go out only for essential tasks, and follow government advisories.

"The new measures will be difficult for everybody. But if we all play our part and look out for one another, we will succeed in stemming the transmission of the virus, just like we did last year."

PM Lee's comments came just after the Multi-Ministry Task force announced further restrictions to curb the spread of Covid-19, including banning dining-in and limiting social gatherings to two people starting from May 16.

As of Saturday, Singapore has 13 active Covid-19 clusters - of which 13 community cases have been linked to the Changi Airport cluster, taking the total number of patients in it to 59.
