EMA to set up advisory panel on energy supply resiliency

THE Energy Market Authority (EMA) is establishing an advisory panel on energy supply resiliency with the goal of identifying strategies to improve the reliability of Singapore’s fuel and energy system.

On Monday (Oct 2), the statutory board said its new advisory panel will examine and recommend strategies to mitigate potential disruptions and uncertainties across the energy supply chain, including upstream sources and domestic generation facilities.

In doing so, the panel will also consider system interdependencies as well as trade-offs that may be required to balance resilience, sustainability and competitiveness.

“The resilience of the power sector is critical, especially in times of increasing uncertainties. As Singapore imports almost all of our energy needs, we are vulnerable to global disruptions,” EMA said.

“Safeguarding the nation’s power supply is crucial to ensuring the well-being of Singaporeans, sustaining economic growth and driving technological advancements.”

The panel will be chaired by Tan Chin Hwee, who stepped down as the Asia-Pacific chief executive of energy and commodities trading firm Trafigura in September this year.

Tan is chairman of SGTraDex Services and serves as a member of the Climate Impact X Advisory Council.

He also serves on the Ministry of Trade and Industry’s trade and connectivity standard committee; the Monetary Authority of Singapore’s financial centre advisory panel; and the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore’s international maritime centre advisory committee 2030 (*see amendement note).

Tan was formerly part of the Future Economy Council’s emerging stronger taskforce, where he was involved in both the supply chain digitalisation and sustainability working groups.
