[SINGAPORE] The world is changing rapidly and Singapore has to change with it, said Prime Minister Lawrence Wong in a social media post ahead of the annual National Day Rally that he will deliver on Sunday (Aug 23) evening.

He said that he will share more about how the country will navigate these changes, and how to harness technology but on Singapore’s own terms. He will also speak about the need to stay open and connected, while keeping cohesive and united.

PM Wong said the rally – the most important political speech of the year in Singapore – will also address ways to give families more support.

He added that another important topic he will talk about is how the government will continue planning and building for the future.

    Lightening the load

Earlier this month in his National Day Message, PM Wong revealed that the government is undertaking a “major review” of how families are supported – not only at the point of marriage and parenthood, but also throughout life’s journey.

“We are taking a fresh look at issues like the costs of raising children, access to affordable infant care and childcare, and other ways to lighten the load on families,” he said in the message that was broadcast on Aug 8.

Singapore’s resident total fertility rate fell to an all-time low of 0.87 in 2025.

A new inter-agency work group – chaired by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office Indranee Rajah – was set up in April this year to help to find ways to aid and support Singaporeans as they navigate marriage and parenthood.

The Marriage and Parenthood Reset Workgroup will look at issues such as financial costs, work-life support, healthcare, housing, preschool and education, among others.

In his National Day Message, PM Wong noted that, ultimately, economic growth and technological progress must translate into better lives for all Singaporeans.

“We want Singapore to be a place where everyone can pursue their aspirations with confidence, raise families with peace of mind, and look to the future with hope,” he said.

He pointed out that family life is coming under greater strain all around the world, as expectations have gone up and parents feel pressured to give their children the best possible start in life.

“At the same time, many are caring for ageing parents while balancing the demands of work. We hear these concerns in Singapore, too. Many families are stretched as they juggle these competing demands,” he said.
