PM Wong to visit Jakarta on Monday for annual leaders’ retreat with Indonesia’s Prabowo
The meeting will ‘explore pathways to strengthen collaboration in areas of mutual interest and benefit’
[JAKARTA] Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will visit Jakarta on Monday (Jul 6) for the annual Singapore-Indonesia Leaders’ Retreat, where he will meet Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto.
The visit will mark the second leaders’ retreat between the two leaders. The annual meeting is the highest-level platform for Singapore and Indonesia to review bilateral ties and chart the direction of cooperation between the two South-east Asian neighbours.
“The leaders’ retreat reaffirms the deep and enduring bilateral ties between Singapore and Indonesia, and the commitment by both governments to deepening bilateral cooperation,” Singapore’s Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) said in a statement on Sunday.
PM Wong last hosted Prabowo for the leaders’ retreat in Singapore in June 2025 during the Indonesian leader’s state visit, with the meeting leading to 19 deliverables across various sectors of cooperation.
President Prabowo said then that the leaders had a very productive and successful retreat.
The two countries exchanged memorandums of understanding on food safety and agriculture technology; cross-border electricity interconnection and trading, renewable and low-carbon energy technologies, energy efficiency and conservation; and cooperation in cross-border carbon capture and storage.
Strengthening collaboration
This year’s retreat in the Indonesian capital will “explore pathways to strengthen collaboration in areas of mutual interest and benefit for Singapore and Indonesia”, with PM Wong and Prabowo set to review progress on bilateral initiatives since their last meeting.
They will also exchange views on regional and global developments.
PM Wong’s visit comes after a series of new bilateral agreements that were announced over the past week.
On Jun 30, Singapore’s National Environment Agency and Indonesia’s Nuclear Energy Regulatory Agency signed an agreement to cooperate in areas including radiation protection, emergency preparedness, radiation monitoring and the development of regulatory policies.
The partnership will cover joint training, personnel exchanges, research collaborations and technical exchanges.
Earlier, on Jun 29, Minister for Sustainability and the Environment Grace Fu and Indonesia’s Minister of Environment Mohammad Jumhur Hidayat signed an agreement to deepen cooperation on environmental sustainability.
The pact covers areas including transboundary pollution, waste management, water and air quality management, climate change and workforce development to support the transition to a low-carbon economy.
While in Jakarta, PM Wong will be accompanied by Deputy Prime Minister Gan Kim Yong, Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing, Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan, Social and Family Development Minister Masagos Zulkifli and Manpower Minister Tan See Leng.
While PM Wong is away, Coordinating Minister for National Security and Home Affairs Minister K Shanmugam will be acting prime minister.
This visit to Indonesia is PM Wong’s second overseas trip this month. He made a two-day official visit to Timor-Leste from Jul 2 to 3, marking his first visit to the country as prime minister and the first by a Singapore prime minister since Timor-Leste gained independence in 2002.
