NATIONAL grid operator SP Group is partnering Qingda Environment, a Chinese company providing environmental technology solutions, to invest and build a 90-Megawatt (MW) aquavoltaic farm.

The investment value of the farm is more than 400 million yuan (S$76 million), said SP Group on Thursday (May 23).

When completed, the project will be connected to a hydrogen production facility to supply solar power to the first green hydrogen production plant in the Chinese province of Shandong.

As part of the project, solar photovoltaic panels will be deployed across 121.4 hectares of an aquafarm. The size is equivalent to that of 161 football fields.

The project is expected to produce 162 million kilowatt-hour of green electricity annually while reducing carbon emissions by 160,000 tonnes.

SP Group said combining solar power generation with aquaculture allows land to be used optimally.

The project is expected to be connected to the power grid by the end of this year.
