WAH & Hua Pte Ltd, a waste-management firm in Singapore, has been acquired by regional player Blue Planet Environmental Solutions in its bid to enter the sustainable waste management market in the city-state.

The deal, Blue Planet's first operational investment in Singapore, would enable the firm to "anchor its expansion into South-east Asia", said Bradley Chew, its director.

Madhujeet Chimni, founder and chairman of Blue Planet, noted: "In collaboration with the experienced management team of Wah & Hua, we hope to create synergies and bring innovative solutions from across the Blue Planet group of companies to Singapore to demonstrate the benefits of a circular economy."

Mr Chimni has also made other investments in Singapore. Last year, he led the purchase of the struggling company behind Indian flatbread-maker Rotimatic. It is now owned by Helix Capital, which was set up in 2015 by Mr Chimni and long-time partner Bharadwaj Chivukula.

Wah & Hua provides sustainability-driven solutions in the collection, recycling, processing and disposal of multiple waste-streams. Founded in 1978 by Steven Tan, the family-run company is now led by general manager Melissa Tan, who also chairs the Waste Management & Recycling Association of Singapore (WMRAS).

The company is now building an integrated waste-to-energy plant in Tuas and a vertical facility equipped with robotic material separation for recyclables. There, contaminated recyclables can be burnt for energy, it said.

"Wah & Hua believes trash is treasure," said Ms Tan. The company aims to "constantly seek solutions to drive business sustainability, while maximising value from waste and minimising environmental impact," she added.

Blue Planet companies now process more than 15,000 tonnes of waste a day across their projects. The companies have deployed more than 70 decentralised organic waste units of various sizes across South Asia.

Other services and technologies Blue Planet provides include non-hazardous e-waste recovery, large-scale landfill remediation and green-building waste solutions in India, Malaysia, Vietnam and the United Kingdom.

Ms Tan said: "With Blue Planet's regional network, Wah & Hua will be in a stronger position for internationalisation in future."
