CLINICAL-STAGE T-cell immunotherapy company Lion TCR has raised US$40 million in a Series B2 financing round, it said on Tuesday (Jun 27).

Guangzhou Industrial Investment and Capital Operation Holding Group led the funding round, with participation from private equity company Guangzhou Guoju Investment and pharmaceutical investment fund CSPC NARD Capital Fund.

Lion TCR, which originated as a spinoff from Singapore’s Agency for Science, Technology and Research in 2015, uses mRNA in its hepatitis B virus (HBV)-specific TCR T-cell therapy to target liver cancer cells.

With its technology, it is looking to develop treatments that target various solid cancers and chronic viral diseases such as hepatitis B, which is strongly linked to liver cancer.

Lion TCR said it will use the funds mainly to support its clinical trials for this HBV-specific TCR T-cell therapy and construct its good manufacturing practice facility in China.

Chief executive Peng Xiaoming said the financing round will support the company’s aim of building a biotechnology ecosystem in Singapore and the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macau Greater Bay Area.
