THE Land Transport Authority (LTA) has awarded 2 civil contracts worth a combined total of S$864 million to design and construct the Defu and Tampines North stations and tunnels as part of the Cross Island Line (CRL) Phase 1.

In a press statement on Tuesday (Feb 22), LTA said the first contract has been awarded to a joint venture between Gamuda Berhad Singapore Branch and Wai Fong Construction. Valued at S$467 million, the contract covers the design and construction of Defu station and tunnels.

Civil engineering and general building contractor Wai Fong Construction is currently involved in the construction of 2 stations on the upcoming Jurong Region Line (JRL), said the press statement. It is also constructing road tunnels between Victoria Street and Kampong Java Road for the North-South Corridor, LTA added.

The second S$397 million contract, which covers the design and construction of Tampines North station and tunnels, has been awarded to China Communications Construction Company (Singapore Branch).

A station along the JRL and the Johor Bahru-Singapore rapid transit system link viaduct and tunnels are being constructed by China Communications Construction Company as well, LTA said.

Construction for the 2 stations and tunnels is expected to commence in the second quarter of 2022, and passenger service for CRL is set to start in 2030.
