[SINGAPORE] Vietnam-based full-service carrier Sun PhuQuoc Airways (SPA) has announced goals for expansion – both in terms of international routes to Asia and its fleet.

At the launch of its Singapore-Phu Quoc route on Wednesday (Jun 17), representatives marked out target markets in the region for the airline.

It aims to begin flying new routes from Vietnam to South Korea, China, Japan, Thailand, Russia, Mongolia and Kazakhstan in 2026.

Most of these routes will originate from the airline’s home base of Phu Quoc.

The carrier will also operate from Vietnam’s other airports, including Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

From 2027, it also targets the Philippines and Australia and in 2028, it will begin adopting wide-body jets – that will allow it to fly long-haul routes to the Middle East and Europe.

The carrier’s fleet numbers 10 aircraft now, mostly Airbus A320 models, with 15 new narrow-body aircraft for short and medium-haul flights joining the fleet by the end of August.

In May, the airline and Boeing revealed a US$22.5 billion order for up to 40 Boeing 787-9 wide-body airliners for long haul routes with deliveries expected to begin 2031.

It has forecast fleet expansion to around 60 aircraft in 2028 and more than 200 aircraft in 2035.

This comes as the carrier is establishing links to key regional air hubs and has announced ambitious expansion plans.

It already flies to Hong Kong, Seoul and Taipei, and will begin flying to Bangkok from Aug 8.

    Singapore is a key market

As a major regional airport, Singapore is a key part of the carrier’s expansion plans. It will begin serving the Phu Quoc-Singapore route from Jul 25.

La Vinh Nam, deputy head of SPA’s business division, said Phu Quoc has a complete tourist ecosystem with resorts and attractions.

He added it has great potential to attract international visitors, with SPA a key part of this vision.

Speaking at the route’s launch, he said Singapore is a key market in its international growth strategy as a major aviation hub in the region and offers strong growth opportunities.

SPA will fly Airbus A321 aircraft daily between Changi International Airport and Phu Quoc International Airport, departing Singapore at 2.20 pm and leaving from Phu Quoc at 10.35 am.

The flight time is around two hours and the price of a return ticket starts at S$233.

SPA will offer both economy and business class seats.

It is the first full service carrier to fly the route, which is currently served by the low cost carriers Scoot and Vietjet, and the first to offer business class for the trip.

SPA is one of the newest airlines around – founded in January 2025 and began commercial operations in November 2025.

Sun Group, one of the largest real estate developers in Vietnam, established the airline in 2025 with a 2.5 trillion dong (S$121.8 million) investment.

The developer operates and manages many of Phu Quoc’s major developments, including Phu Quoc International Airport, as well as major developments including Sunset Town and various other attractions.

In March 2026, an expansion of the airport was announced at an estimated cost of 22 trillion dong in preparation for Phu Quoc to host the Apec 2027 summit.

Sun Group has partnered with Changi Airports International – a unit of Singapore airport operator Changi Airport Group – to develop and run Phu Quoc International Airport.

On the back of record passenger traffic in 2025, Changi Airport is continuing to establish new city links and increasing the frequency of existing ones.

New for 2026 are flights to Chiang Rai, Thailand; Belitung, Palembang and Pontianak, Indonesia; the Sunshine Coast and Newcastle, Australia, with Muscat, Oman beginning on Jul 2.
