[SINGAPORE] Having finished the last two seasons rock bottom in the standings, the team of golfers from CLA Global have bounced back with a vengeance this year as they look to stamp their mark on The Straits Times & The Business Times Corporate Golf League.

Armed with a fresh group of players this season, CLA Global performed admirably during the annual competition’s second leg on Friday (Mar 27) to move up to third position in the table.

With the 104 points they collected at Tanah Merah Country Club’s Tampines course, their grand total after two games increased to 209 – just seven points behind new leaders Team Boss, and only three behind the tournament’s presenting sponsor Singapore Pools in the eight-team competitive section.

CLA Global was led by Grace Xie, who was crowned the individual champion among the 32 players in the competitive category.

Xie played off an 11-course handicap and returned a fabulous 81 for 38 points to send her team into third position, which was the target that was set earlier by team captain Henry Tan.

“After two disastrous years (in 2024 and 2025), when our emphasis was solely to entertain our clients, we have changed our focus to keep our customers happy and at the same time achieve a mid-table finish,” said Tan.

Xie edged out SPH Sultans of Swing’s Jaime Ho by one point for the honour of being the individual champion. Singapore Pools’ Samir Bedi finished third on countback with 36 points.

Xie also bagged two back-to-back birdies on holes six and seven. On the uphill par-three sixth, she sank a 20-footer putt. On the par-four seventh, she saw her chip from outside the green with a 60-degree wedge find the hole.

A senior adviser with CSA Global, Xie only started playing golf five years ago. She was the winner of the recent Singapore Island Country Club intermediate championship and a charity event at Tanah Merah Country Club.

    Team Boss in charge

Having a sound knowledge of the course and good ball striking helped lift Team Boss to the top of the table after the second leg.

Fielding four players who are all members of Tanah Merah Country Club, the team took pole position with 106 points on the Tampines course that carried their two-leg total to 216 points.

John Lim (36 points on 11-over 83), Gabriel Tan (35 on 82), Henry Mo (35 on 82) and Thio Wei Kai (34 on 88) all produced consistent displays.

Team Boss captain Andre Huber said: “I’m really proud of my boys. I knew that familiarity with the tough course on a windy day would help them steer their way to respectable scores. The plan worked right.”

They now stand four points ahead of a formidable Singapore Pools team, who also totalled 106 points in the second leg of the five-round series.

Singapore Pools were led by Tanah Merah Country Club’s star league player Bedi, who scored 36 points from a 73 score – the lowest gross score for the day.

Their other contributors were Clinton Ang (36 points on 92) and Ee Hock Chye (34 on 95).

First-round leaders Orchid Country Club slipped to joint-fourth with 97 points along with Singapore Global Trust (98 points) on a 208 total.

Over in the social category, the best player in the second leg was former national player Vincent Khua (75 with 38 points), who finished two points ahead of Team Boss’ William Tay (83).

Khua also lifted his Mitsubishi Electric team to the overall team honours. Together with partners Michael Ng, Jonathan Yeo and Allan Tan, they amassed a total of 105 points.

National player Brandon Han, who represents CLA Global this season, claimed the “Longest Drive” prize with 280 m on the par-four hole two.

The third leg of the Corporate Golf League will be held at Sentosa Golf Club’s Tanjong course on Apr 10.
