Coastal states must provide shelter to ships in trouble so that salvors can minimise any damage to the environment
UNLESS the situation has changed considerably in the past couple of days, as you read this, salvage crews are still trying to keep control of a disabled, partially burnt-out tanker somewhere in the waters between South Korea and Japan.
On Dec 29, the 44,404 dwt Hong Kong-flagged Maritime Maisie was carrying 29,337 tonnes of volatile chemicals when she collided off Busan, South Korea, with car carrier Gravity Highway, which was on sea trials from Hyundai Mipo Dockyard.
Soon after the collision, the Korean Coast Guard rescued all 27 of Maritime Maisie's crew but requests from the ship's operator, MSI Ship Management, to the South Korean and Japanese governments to allow the ship into a sheltered place of refuge were refused.
