THE National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre (NVPC) on June 22 was awarded a grant by Tableau Software to drive social impact with data. Valued at over US$81,000, the grant consists of Tableau licences and training services.

The Tableau Foundation is an initiative spearheaded by the employees of Tableau Software that encourages the use of facts and analytical reasoning to solve problems.

With its expertise in visual analytics, Tableau helps people in seeing and understanding data. NVPC's Research and Giving.sg teams currently employ Tableau to connect and visualise data rapidly, combine multiple views of data, gain actionable insights and share secured information with key NVPC staff for data-driven decision making.

Globally, it has become common consensus that data has become a potent ingredient in effecting positive change. Both NVPC and Tableau believe that data plays an integral role in non-profit organisations, enabling them to increase transparency and accountability, fortify their relationships with funders, discover new trends in their programmes, and share compelling stories about their communities.

NVPC CEO Melissa Kwee said: "We are happy that Tableau is a Company of Good member and partnering us to do good. At NVPC, we are committed to become a thought-leader in the giving space that leverages data to drive and nurture Singapore's giving culture. Our team, armed with Tableau, seeks to cultivate a data-first environment, upgrade our skillsets, and enrich our storytelling capabilities to our stakeholders."

She also added that NVPC hopes to serve as an example to inspire and galvanise other non-profit organisations locally to harness the power of data and analytics in their organisations.

Tableau Software, working through the Tableau Foundation, aspires to expedite change through making free licences of its visual analytics software to small non-profits, NGOs, and charitable community-based organisations across 192 countries.

Tableau Asia-Pacific senior vice-president JY Pook said: "We are honoured to be able to play a part in NVPC's journey towards promoting philanthropy and volunteerism in Singapore. At Tableau, we have seen first-hand how teams in various industries and of different sizes transform into effective and resourceful organisations with the help of data analytics."

She added: "We know that people who give their time and resources to help the communities they know best are no different, and NVPC's efforts to put data in the hands of those decision makers can have an equally powerful impact in helping to solve the world's problems."
