GE2020: PAP to face off against Peoples Voice in Jalan Besar GRC

MANPOWER minister Josephine Teo and the rest of her four-member People's Action Party (PAP) team in Jalan Besar GRC will square off against the opposition Peoples Voice (PV) at the July 10 general election (GE).

Mrs Teo's team is unchanged from what was announced on Monday. It includes veteran Members of Parliament (MPs) Heng Chee How, 58, and Denise Phua, 60, as well as new face Wan Rizal Wan Zakariah, 42.

PV's party chief Lim Tean, 55, will lead the PV quartet, including Leong Sze Hian, 66, Nor Azlan Bin Sulaiman, 49, and Michael Fang Amin, 43.

Mrs Teo, who was part of the Bishan-Toa Payoh GRC since 2006, is helming the constituency for the first time. Former communications and information minister Yaacob Ibrahim and five-term MP Lily Neo have stepped down.

The Radin Mas single seat will see a face-off between PAP's Melvin Yong, 48, and Reform Party candidate Kumar Appavoo, 48.

"The Covid-19 situation has likely affected the livelihood of many of the residents in the Radin Mas district," said Mr Yong. "I'll do my best to take care of them, and ensure that job security will be addressed first and foremost after this GE."

Mr Yong takes over as a candidate from the last incumbent Sam Tan, 61, who had won the ward twice - both in the 2011 and 2015 elections - after it was carved out from Tanjong Pagar GRC.

During a three-cornered fight in the 2015 GE, RP's Mr Appavoo garnered 12.7 per cent of the votes while PAP had 77.3 per cent. The third candidate who contested the Radin Mas Single Member Constituency was independent candidate Han Hui Hui.

"I'm back in Radin Mas to fight this election, please give me your support," said Mr Appavoo, who is also a businessman. "Let's have an alternative for a change."
