What will fuel the fleet in 2050?

Published Tue, Mar 19, 2019 · 09:50 PM

THE shipping industry can be forgiven for focusing on how it will cope with next January's mandatory global 0.50 per cent sulphur in fuel cap. Understandably short and medium term factors are going to be decisive.

For many companies the option of fitting scrubbers is an attractive one and, I suspect, will have a high take-up within the world's commercial fleet. It will solve the problem for now.

Removing sulphur is all about improving air quality. Achieving that through reducing emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) and sulphur oxides (SOx) has been a major focus for the industry's regulator, the International Maritime Organization (IMO).
