As a subsidiary of Reckitt, Mead Johnson Nutrition (Asia Pacific) in Singapore is a showcase for environmental consciousness through its efforts to minimise climate impact, innovate for efficiency and instil an energy-saving ethos among its workforce. The company started its powder-based infant milk manufacturing operations here in 2013.

Reckitt aims to be a business that enhances society and the environment. As part of its overarching strategy, the company has laid out ambitious targets that includes a 50 per cent reduction in its products’ carbon footprint by 2030, a 65 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions within its operations by 2030, and a 25 per cent reduction in energy use by 2025 against a 2015 baseline.

To deliver on these goals, Reckitt has put in place an energy management team that tracks energy consumption, guides the development of energy efficiency projects and promotes an organisational culture of energy savings and continuous improvement.

“The energy management team provides visible evidence of the importance of cooperation across the organisation to ensure the success of the energy management system. The team oversees the development of our energy policy, energy objectives and targets,” said Gerald Tang, senior manager for engineering and sustainability at Reckitt’s Singapore Nutrition Plant.

The company was one of the winners of the Excellence in Energy, Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Management accolade at this year’s EENP Awards.

Integral to Reckitt’s achievements is the fostering of an environment where energy efficiency is not merely a corporate target, but rather a shared responsibility. Through an array of initiatives – from external training, sustainability campaigns, seminars and even energy-saving stickers – the company educates and empowers its employees to be proactive when it comes to energy efficiency.

Between 2019 and 2022, Reckitt achieved a significant 12 per cent reduction in energy consumption and carbon emissions due to a number of energy optimisation projects. The key initiatives include boiler and chiller optimisation as well as LED projects.

Reckitt has lined up more projects designed to further curb energy consumption at its Singapore plant. A forthcoming initiative involves a site-wide solar farm scheduled for 2024, that aims to supply 10 per cent to 12 per cent of the plant’s electrical consumption via renewable sources. Additionally, the company is exploring the incorporation of a biomass boiler and heat recovery system to further bolster its sustainability agenda.
