WHEN it comes to choosing a musical instrument for a child to learn, the natural choice for most parents would be the piano or the violin.

Not for the father of twins Tan Su-Min and Tan Su-Hui, however, who decided it was better for his daughters to learn the ruan (lute) and guzheng (zither) respectively instead, as a nod to their ethnicity.
