Are Americans turning into Europeans?

It used to be that Western Europeans tended to be more secular, liberal and cosmopolitan than Americans. That's becoming less so these days and the gap is closing.

IN THE first decades following World War II, French and other continental intellectuals were warning that Europe was being "Americanised".

Europe was being "colonised" by the Americans, and the royal palaces, the magnificent cathedrals, the medieval castles, and the great old sites of Western civilisation were being replaced by ugly shopping malls and standardised office buildings while the superb French cuisine was coming under the threat of McDonald's and Burger King.
