Patient-centric focus no more an extra in value-based care
TODAY'S healthcare is not just about delivering the right care to the right people at the right time, but also about improving care outcomes. The transformation from fee-for-service to value-based healthcare is well under way, but what is still lacking today is patient engagement.
Reflective of a growing worldwide trend, and what we know in Singapore as moving beyond quality to value, the concept has at its core a simple equation: Value = Quality ÷ Cost. We focus on raising quality as the drive towards value, rather than pure cost reduction. However, still missing from this equation is patient engagement, which should be implemented from the very beginning in the transition to value-based care.
One of the obstacles to delivering value-based care is actually knowledge and the ability to manage knowledge. Clinicians are struggling with information overload - by 2020, medical information is expected to double every 73 days. Clinicians need systems to access the best knowledge when they need it and protocols to help them make complex decisions.
