Trump has put a new item on the diplomatic menu for North Korea
The "burger diplomacy" or face-to-face talks proposal has the potential to work going by similar approaches by US leaders in the past.
PRESIDENT Donald Trump's off-the-cuff proposal to conduct "burger diplomacy" with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un should not be written off as bizarre. It could be the first step - or bite - towards more shared meals that could lead to an eventual breakthrough.
Mr Trump will be in very good company along with former president Jimmy Carter who had travelled to Pyongyang where he met Mr Kim's grandfather, the supreme leader Kim Il-sung, for a private session in 1994, and successfully persuaded him to negotiate with the administration of President Bill Clinton on his nuclear programme.
Mr Trump's offer to meet the young Mr Kim is promising because no serving US president has ever met the leader of North Korea while in power.
