The Middle East was plunged into its biggest diplomatic crisis in years when Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain and Egypt all abruptly severed relations with Qatar, accusing the small Gulf Arab state of supporting Islamist militants and their arch-adversary Iran.
