Wedded Bliss
How Chinese Singaporeans got married from the 1900s to the present partly depended on the dialect groups they belonged to. As part of its annual Cultural Extravaganza, the Singapore Chinese Cultural Centre looks at the history of Hokkien, Teochew and Cantonese weddings in Singapore from the turn of the 20th century, featuring their wedding customs, costumes and cuisines. There'll be photographs, period dresses and traditional props to immerse you in age-old traditions, some of which have disappeared from ceremonies today. There's also a jewellery workshop by Carolyn Kan of Carrie K to help you understand the changes of wedding jewellery, such as the si dian jin, over the years.
Then & Now: Celebrating Chinese Wedding Traditions runs from May 25 to 31 at the SCCC gallery. Kan's workshop on jewellery runs on May 25 and 26 from 2.30pm to 3.30pm at the same location. Free.
