Lear Revisited
The increasingly cutting-edge theatre company Nine Years Theatre is back with a reworking of Shakespeare's classic, King Lear. Writer-director Nelson Chia imagines a scenario where Lear has died, and a company of actors dubbed the "Fools Society" is staging a play in front of the people to reveal the circumstances of his death.
Can the country continue without Lear? Can those who succeed him rule better than he did? Retitled Lear Is Dead, it tells a story that perhaps has more resonance for a Singapore audience than the original King Lear does. The play stars Mia Chee, Hang Qian Chou and Neo Hai Bin.
Lear Is Dead is in Mandarin with English surtitles. It runs at the Drama Centre from Oct 26 to 28. Tickets from Sistic.
