Drum It Up
Renowned Indonesian filmmaker Garin Nugroho is set to direct the first large-scale theatrical commission by the Esplanade for its annual Pesta Raya. The epic musical The Prince And The Drum tells the story of Prince Fatih of the Kingdom of Sritanmira, who embarks on a perilous and fantastical journey of self-discovery. With a script by Zulfadli Rashid and music by Riduan Zalani and NADI Singapura, this ambitious production also celebrates the legacy of percussion music in Southeast Asia. Some 40 performers on stage will play a wide range of instruments, such as the kompang (hand-drum) and the jidur (large, barrel-like drum played with drumsticks or mallets). 'Thunderous' doesn't begin to describe it.
The Prince And The Drum plays at the Esplanade Theatre on June 29 at 8pm. Tickets from Sistic.
