China has overtaken America to be the world's biggest economy, while the White House continues to be preoccupied, if not obsessed, with the mess in the Middle East.

    THE news that China has toppled America to become the biggest economy in the world received only scant coverage in the American media when the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reported the figures last week.

    In fact, the White House and congressional leaders refrained from issuing any public statements in response to what was seen as marking a major change in the global economic balance of power.
