Towkays Of Yore

TAN TOCK SENG. Tan Lark Sye. Aw Boon Haw. Lee Kong Chian. They're the names of early Chinese pioneers who set the stage for Singapore to grow into a vibrant First World business hub.

To honour the contributions of these influential leaders and businessmen, the Sun Yat Sen Nanyang Memorial Hall has devoted a revamped gallery to telling their stories.

Alvin Tan, National Heritage Board's deputy chief executive (policy and community) says: "The new gallery seeks to acknowledge and showcase the leadership and contributions of local Chinese business pioneers. Through their stories, we hope to distill and instill their values, of hua shang jing sheng or integrity, loyalty, altruism and innovation in our visitors, provide more relatable role models for our younger generation, and encourage more Singaporeans to put these values into action."
